Kids are foundation of business success By Helen Thomas
CHILDREN and weddings don't often mix but two women have come up with a solution to keep the little ones entertained while the adults party.
Alice Barden, 38, of Broughton Gifford, and Nicci Brown, 33, of Kington St Michael, started Silly-Billys mobile crèche earlier this year and the idea is proving a success, with plenty of business building up.
Mrs Barden said: "We're still in the first year but everyone says what a brilliant idea it is. They've never heard of such a thing.
"So many people are having second marriages so they already have children and are relieved they don't have to worry about the children at the wedding."
The women take along a selection of toys, games and equipment to each event and cater for children from babies to 12-year-olds. Activities involve party games and a variety of arts and crafts and they offer drinks and snacks.
At weddings the crèche usually covers the meal and speeches but they are also available for babysitting as the celebrations continue.
The pair met while completing a childminding course and started talking about how weddings are not child-friendly.
"A lot of people say they don't want children there or try and take nannies or people to look after them. We thought there must be a gap in the market," Mrs Barden said.
"We've approached masses of hotels which have taken up our brochures and there has been a lot of enthusiasm for the idea."
Both women are registered childminders and have plenty of experience working with children.
Mrs Brown used to be a nanny and has worked in the UK and the US while Mrs Barden worked for the BBC as a stage manager and often worked on children's programmes and as a chaperone.
As well as weddings the pair run crèches in corporate functions and have just been awarded a contract with Relate, to run their crèche while the relationship experts run parenting courses in Chippenham.
Mrs Barden said: "At weddings it means parents can go and enjoy themselves without worrying about entertaining their children or being embarrassed about them screaming at just the wrong moment.
"We've also done a gay wedding in Bath and crèche for the Business Link for women in the Rural Business Enterprise.
"The business link made the function more accessible for more women."
